Spring security

As the days get longer and we spend more time in our gardens and with our windows open, homes become more vulnerable to break-ins. Here are 10 top-tips to keep your home secure throughout the warmer months.

  • Make sure you have a good lockable shed or outbuilding if you need to store valuable items outside.
  • Install movement sensor lighting in your garden and around the outside of your home.
  • Cover garden furniture or other items such as BBQ’s when they are out of use in the garden, to deter thieves.
  • Bicycles are very vulnerable to theft, lock them and put them out of sight or passers-by.
  • Remember to lock your front door when you are in the house – particularly if you are in the back garden.
  • Think about where you leave car keys and valuables. Are they all in a pile in your hallway by an unlocked door or open window?
  • Check what’s covered by your insurance policy; often outside furniture or bicycles are not.
  • Make sure tools and equipment are locked away, as they provide great opportunities for intruders to access your home.
  • Talk to your neighbours. It might seem obvious, but keeping an eye on one another’s homes when you go on holiday or when you are at work can be a huge deterrent. Taking bins out and watering plants will give the illusion that a property is still being occupied.
  • Arrange a home security review.
